Academic Activities

I have maintained an active program of academic scholarship and teaching throughout my clinical career.  I hold two academic appointments at the University of Toronto, one in the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine and one at New College in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.  I am also on the Faculty and Board of the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis where I teach in the 4-year psychoanalytic training program (a post-graduate program for psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals).

The focus of my academic work has been broadly defined by an ongoing interest in innovations in psychological treatment and in demonstrating the effectiveness of psychotherapy.  My research has been supported by the Canadian Institute for Health Research and I have published widely in top journals in medicine, psychiatry and clinical psychology.

At the present time, I continue with an active program of academic scholarship with a more specific focus on demonstrating the effectiveness of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.  I am currently working on a book tentatively entitled "The Empirical Foundations of Contemporary Psychoanalysis."
